Trimming and shoeing horses can be difficult even under the best of circumstances. When conditions are not optimal, it makes the task much more difficult. We are not unreasonable about working conditions, but these are some basics that we will expect from you:
- We prefer to observe the horse in motion (walk & trot) prior to starting work. This allows us to evaluate their movements and determine if there are any needed corrections, lameness issues, etc.
- We will not work outside when it is raining or snowing. If you have a suitable covered area which will accommodate the back end of our service truck, we will work inside while it is raining or snowing. In the summer time, please provide a well ventilated and shaded work area.
- We do not work on Sundays. Saturdays are by special appointment only.
- We prefer to not refit the work of a previous farrier. We take pride in our work and stand behind it. That is not possible when reapplying someone else's work.
- We ask that your horse be well mannered/disciplined. Please tell us if the horse has problems. We may be able to work with problems if we know about them in advance.
- We require a suitable, well light working area free of mud, sand, tall grasses, and uneven ground. A concrete area is preferred.
- We ask that your horse be tied or held and that the horse and feet are clean and free of mud, excessive dirt, oils etc. at the scheduled time.
- If your horse is energetic, lunging prior to the scheduled time is recommended.
- If your scheduled time is during the horse's normal feeding time, please feed the horse prior to our arrival. Hungry horses do not stand well.
- If working on a mare with a foal, please have the foal restrained.
- If your horse is not behaving, we ask that you discipline your horse. We are not responsible for training your horse. Unruly horses can not be worked on.
- We ask that you maintain a regular shoeing schedule of 4-10 weeks. Waiting until your horse loses a shoe usually results in damaged feet and reduces the quality of our work.
- If your horse has lost a shoe, or if the shoe is loose please call as soon as possible. We will try to work a lost shoe into the current schedule in order for the shoe to be replaced as quickly as possible.
Payment |
- We accept cash or check as payment. Payment is required at the time of the service. We do charge a $30.00 fee on returned checks. Post dated checks will not be accepted.
- There will be a $20.00 charge for lost/thrown shoes.
- Please contact us for rates as they are customized for your horse's needs. Our rates are comparable to other certified farriers in the area.
